Some Like It Hot

The Process

Accuweather is a mobile weather app which comes preinstalled on most Android phones. In looking at the User interface of the App I was inspired to design an interface that would be both functional yet aesthetically pleasing.

When designing for an interior space to evoke a specific mood, I considered the interplay of colour and lighting. Warm tones like reds and yellows can create a cosy and inviting atmosphere, while cooler blues and greens promote calmness.

The Design Ops

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May - Shakespeare

The weather can have a significant impact on our mood and overall well-being. Therefore I considered how the mood of the weather , in tandem with illustrations and audio could be integrated in to spatial design. This refers to how spaces feel, how they are organised and how they might enrich the lives of those experiencing them.

What: I first created a wireframe that outlines the user journey, I then created a prototype that gives a glimpse into how the app would work upon completion. It would only be limited to South Africa.

I have Accuweather on my phone and even though fulfils its function of telling me the weather, I've found it to be uninspiring visually. It feels quite cold and technical.

With this in mind, I decided to capture the whimsical nature of warm days, and the cosy nostalgia of cold days by coming up with a weather App called “Some like it hot”. The App would feature the standard weather forecasts and tips on how to prepare with the weather for that day.

However, it also features flat illustrations of the city you are checking the weather forecast
for as well as appropriate illustrations depicting, a warm day or a cold day.
